HOMEWORK for Friday, Sept. 6.
1.How do you THINK that families are changing? List the changes that you think have happened from your grandparents, your parents and your generation in the family.
Feel free to think outside the box in your responses.
Here’s MY example :
When I was a child in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, my grandmother NEVER worked outside the home. When we went to visit, all the food that we ate was grown or raised on their farm. It was a very traditional family unit.
My grandmother was in charge of the house and the children. My grandfather worked on the farm. This went on until the death of my grandmother in the early 1980’s due to complications from diabetes.
1980’s
My mother was married at the age of 20 and had the first of 4 children at the age of 21. She was a stay at home mom until my parents divorced . My mother entered the workforce for the first time at the age of 37 as she was now a single parent with little financial support from my father. At this time in my community, my mother was the ONLY divorced parent! My mother was able to receive training to enter the workforce. My mother remarried in 1982. My stepfather had 3 children, we became a blended family. My mother is a very healthy 74 year old.
(early 2000’s to now!)
I married my husband when I was 27 and he was 29. I kept my maiden name when I married. I have always worked fulltime. We were married for almost 6 years before we had children. I did have have the opportunity to stay home with each of my 2 children for 2 full years each. After my extended maternity leaves, I was able to return to my teaching career. It is important to me/for me to spend time with my family. One way we accomplish this is to have dinners together as often as possible. One of MY favourite traditions that we have is to say grace before every meal and to have Sunday night dinner in the dining room.
